This shouldn’t put you off though.  In spite of the possible risks, reading and collecting signed first editions in the crime, thrillers and mystery genre can be a worthwhile pastime.  For instance, this field seems to attract far more than its fair share of first-rate, up and coming writers.  So you’ll never find a criminal shortage of creative new fiction here, thanks to the likes of Elanor Dymott and Lloyd Shepherd, to name but two.

Of course, the newcomers get to share a platform with established authors of this genre such as S J Bolton, Elly Griffiths, Stuart MacBride and Ian Rankin.  All bestselling novelists who still have the knack of being able to surprise with each new book they write.  The perfect case in point being, who’d have put money on the return of Rebus in 2012?
