Fantasy fiction for collectors of signed first editions
This is the largest section (with sci-fi a close 2nd) in our own book collection. If you’re curious as to why this should be, we’ll tell you. It’s because life can be, well… humdrum at times. So, it’s nice to talk with unicorns (more of that later), escape to wondrous cities and add to our lexis of unpronounceable words.
Authors we like include Elspeth Cooper (The Wild Hunt series), Aidan Harte (Irenicon), Graham Joyce (Some Kind of Fairy Tale) and Daniel Polansky (Low Town series).
One of our favourite subgenres in this field of fiction is ‘urban fantasy’ and this is how the author Elizabeth Bear defines it:
“In urban fantasy you don’t leave the chip shop and go to another world to find the unicorn. Rather, the unicorn shows up at the chip shop and orders the cod.”
We think this is a super explanation and very apt when it comes to the tales of Ben Aaronovitch (Peter Grant series) and Suzanne McLeod (Spellcrackers.com series), for example.
