The Girl with a Clock for a Heart by Peter Swanson

‘… it was like I had a secret disease, or there was this clock inside of me, ticking like a heart, and at any moment an alarm would go off …’

George Foss never thought he’d see her again, but on a late-August night in Boston, there she is, in his local bar, Jack’s Tavern.

When George first met her, she was an eighteen-year-old college freshman from Sweetgum, Florida. She and George became inseparable in their first fall semester, so George was devastated when he got the news that she had committed suicide over Christmas break.  But, as he stood in the living room of the girl’s grieving parents, he realized the girl in the photo on their mantelpiece – the one who had committed suicide – was not his girlfriend.  Later, he discovered the true identity of the girl he had loved – and of the things she may have done to escape her past.

Now, twenty years later, she’s back, and she’s telling George that he’s the only one who can help her…

In his electrifying debut, Peter Swanson evokes the spirit of Body Heat and Double Indemnity, in a thriller about love, loss and those memories we hold closest to our hearts.

Peer & Press Reviews

The Girl With a Clock for a Heart is a bold and ambitious debut written with all the skill and assurance of a master in the making.  A crisp, clear narrative, an unfathomable line between good guys and bad guys and bucketloads of suspense ensure that the mystery continues to the very last page.

Pam Norfolk, Lancashire Evening Post

An edge-of-your-seat psychological thriller that dares you to turn the next page, but it’s much more dangerous than that.  It dares you to take a hard, long look at people from your past and ask yourself who’s worth holding on to and who’s worth letting go.

Wiley Cash, 2012 John Creasey (New Blood) Dagger winner

As good as they come.  A thrilling slice of contemporary noir with twists that you won’t see coming.

Mark Billingham

Collectors Notes & Author Links

  • Faber & Faber published Swanson’s debut novel, The Girl with a Clock for a Heart, in February 2014.  This book met with such positive critical acclaim that James Marsh (director of Man on Wire, Shadow Dancer and The Theory of Everything) optioned the film rights.
  • His second book, The Kind Worth Killing, is in the running for the 2015 CWA Gold Dagger award, so looks set to emulate the success of his first book at the very least.
  • Peter is no stranger to prizes though, having previously won poetry awards from The Lyric and the Yankee Magazine.  He also writes short fiction and reviews, which have appeared in The Atlantic, Asimov’s Science Fiction, Measure and the Notre Dame Review, for example.
