Scar Night by Alan Campbell

First in a trilogy, this magnificently colourful epic of urban fantasy opens up an intricate new world of unforgettable characters and thrilling events, in the best tradition of Gormenghast.

For a hundred generations, the city of Deepgate has hung suspended by giant chains over a seemingly bottomless abyss.  In the unfathomable darkness below is said to reside the dread god Ulcis, ‘hoarder of souls’, with his army of ghosts.  Outside the city extend the barren wastes of Deadsands, inhabited by the enemy Heshette, so that safe access is guaranteed only by a fleet of airships.

At the hub of the city itself rises the Temple, in one of whose many crumbling spires resides a youthful angel, Dill, the last of his line.  Descendant of heroic battle-archons, yet barely able to wield the great sword he has inherited from his forebears, he lives a sheltered existence under the watchful eye of Presbyter Sypes, who rules the Temple.

Yet despite his sense of purposelessness, Dill’s destiny is about to unfold – one that will take him down into the terrifying depths of the pit in a desperate quest to save the teeming but precarious city from total annihilation at the hands of a cunning and resourceful traitor.

Peer & Press Reviews

For a first novel, Scar Night is indecently good.

The Guardian

What a fun, fresh read.  This is what every fantasy reader needs to read to refresh themselves.  It is a true melting-pot of ideas that shouldn’t blend together, yet somehow do.

Steve Diamond, Elitist Book Reviews

A richly imagined adventure well worthy of his impressive first novel.

Edition background

A leading London bookshop asked Alan Campbell to sign, date and number 100 first editions of Scar Night, his debut novel.  He also signed a letter, dated 5th July 2006, confirming these books were the only numbered edition.

Each book came with a (skewed) photocopy of this letter to prove authenticity.  The book we are selling is complete with its copy of the letter.

The handwritten number is in the centre of a blind embossed circular ‘stamp’ (technically known as a seal) on the title page.  Around its edge, the seal reads EXCLUSIVE SIGNED FIRST EDITION.
