Macbeth by Jo Nesbo

He’s the best cop they’ve got.

When a drug bust turns into a bloodbath it’s up to Inspector Macbeth and his team to clean up the mess.

He’s also an ex-drug addict with a troubled past.

He’s rewarded for his success.  Power.  Money.  Respect.  They’re all within reach.

But a man like him won’t get to the top.

Plagued by hallucinations and paranoia, Macbeth starts to unravel.  He’s convinced he won’t get what is rightfully his.

Unless he kills for it.

The gripping new thriller from the author of The Snowman inspired by one of Shakespeare’s darkest and most psychologically haunting plays.

Peer & Press Reviews

Immensely enjoyable and gloriously dark…  He has accomplished that toughest of literary feats: putting his own unmistakable mark on one of Shakespeare’s most celebrated plays.

Matt Gibson, Daily Express

Macbeth as a SWAT team leader.  His wife as a former prostitute.  The three witches as drug dealers.  It’s Shakespeare’s darkest tale – reimagined by the king of Nordic noir.

Graeme Thomson, Mail on Sunday

The fun comes from watching a crack storyteller put his noir stamp on one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies…  Nesbo manages the balancing act of being true to the original play without slighting his own interests as a writer: bleak settings, loyalty (or the lack thereof) among crooks, clever escapes from tight spots, the affinities between policemen and the criminals they chase.

Dennis Drabelle, Washington Post

Edition background

This title is part of the The Hogarth Shakespeare series, a major international project that will see the Bard’s plays reimagined by some of today’s bestselling and most celebrated writers.  The books will be true to the spirit of the original plays, while giving authors an exciting opportunity to do something new.

The first book in the series, published October 2015, was The Gap of Time, Jeanette Winterson’s retelling of The Winter’s Tale.

Three books were published in 2016, the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death: Shylock is My Name (The Merchant of Venice) by Howard Jacobson, Vinegar Girl (The Taming of the Shrew) by Anne Tyler and Hag-Seed (The Tempest) by Margaret Atwood.

Tracy Chevalier’s New Boy (Othello) and Edward St Aubyn’s Dunbar (King Lear) followed in 2017.  Jo Nesbo’s eponymous Macbeth is published in 2018.

The eighth and final book in the series is Gillian Flynn’s take on Hamlet, which isn’t due for publication until 2021!
