The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult

Sage Singer has a past that makes her want to hide from the world.  Sleeping by day and working in a bakery by night, she kneads her emotion into the beautiful bread she bakes.

But when she strikes up an unlikely friendship with Josef Weber, a quiet man old enough to be her grandfather, and respected pillar of the community, she feels that finally, she may have found someone she can open up to.

Until Josef tells her the evil secret he’s kept for sixty years.

Caught between Josef’s search for redemption and her shattered illusions, Sage turns to her family history and her own life for answers.  As she uncovers the truth from the darkest horrors of war, she must follow a twisting trail between betrayal and forgiveness, love and revenge.  And ask herself the most difficult question she has ever faced – can murder ever be justice?  Or mercy?

Number One bestselling author Jodi Picoult combines topical moral issues and emotional human drama with the page-turning compulsion of a thriller.

Peer & Press Reviews

A romance-cum-issues-based page-turner dealing in history, its evils and the possibility of forgiveness and transformation, this is as harrowing as it is readable with powerful scenes in Auschwitz.

The Independent

With characters that hook the reader into their stories, a well-researched and thought-provoking plot, and an acute eye for detail, this is a novel that deals with big issues: good and evil, forgiveness and redemption, love and justice.  I read it in two long sittings, desperate to know the outcome.

Woman and Home

The first person accounts about what happened in the Holocaust are absolutely harrowing… there are descriptive passages that make you catch your breath.

Edition background:

The number line on the copyright page of this first edition has just the single number 2 in it, indicating the book is a second printing.  (A few Hachette UK imprints now use a single digit number line to signify the printing.)  Yet facing the copyright page (and before the dedication page) is a page with the following inscription:

“This special first print run of The Storyteller is dedicated to my UK fans… you are the reason I keep writing and keep visiting.”

So many of you have touched me with your loyalty and kind comments we decided to put some of your names in the endpapers of the book as our way to say thank you.”

As the above text clearly shows, the book shouldn’t have this page.  The page should only have been included in first, not second or subsequent, print books.  That’s why this edition is an anomaly, a curious addition / talking point to add to any book collection.

Book features:Cream cover with metallic turquoise text on spine; cream endpapers printed along their bottom edges with a motif that echoes that on the bottom edges of the jacket.  The endpapers also list the names of some of Jodi Picoult’s UK fans.
Jacket features:Matt laminate finish with metallic text and gloss UV highlights.
