The Raw Shark Texts by Steven Hall

The award-winning cult classic.

First things first, stay calm.

Eric Sanderson wakes up in a place he doesn’t recognise, unable to remember who he is.  All he has left are journal entries recalling Clio, a perfect love now gone.  As he begins to piece his memories back together, Eric finds that he is being hunted by a creature that moves in language, that swims through the currents of human interaction.

With the help of his cynical cat Ian, Eric must search for the Ludovician, the force that is threatening his life, and Dr Trey Fidorus, the only man who knows the truth.

Peer & Press Reviews

A horror-dystopic-philosophical mash-up that has critics drawing comparisons to Borges.

New York Times

A thriller with elements of sci-fi, romance and memoir…  A cracking read… but it’s the outrageous inventiveness that marks it out as really special.

Irish Independent

A pychological thriller with shades of Memento and The Matrix and the fiction of Mark Danielewski; page-turning, playful and chilling by turns.

Edition background

Steven Hall’s prize-winning debut novel is an international bestseller that has been translated into over 30 languages.  Its title is a play on the words the Rorschach [inkblot] tests.

Edition features

Hoo-Ha designed the beautiful pictorial front and back covers of this hardcover book (no dust jacket).  The endpapers and slipcase get a similar treatment with both having different front and back illustrations.

The copy we have for sale is unusual in that it is complete with both its promotional elements (see images).  These are:

  • A Post-It note fixed to the half title page that’s printed with an extract from a review by prize-winning author Mark Haddon that reads “Very entertaining.  The bastard love-child of The Matrix, Jaws and The Da Vinci Code.”
  • An A5 copy of Negative 6/36, which is loosely inserted into the book.  This ‘negative’ was only ever issued with the UK special edition of this title.
(It was originally planned that for each of the book’s 36 chapters there would be an ‘un-chapter’, a negative.  Careful reading of the novel will reveal why these un-chapters are called negatives.  As this was an ongoing project, it’s still not clear if all 36 negatives have ever been published.)
